Industry of Yoga?
When you travel, don’t you find it slightly comforting to seek out things familiar? Well, instead of McDonald’s I found myself gravitating towards YOGA. After traveling so much I noticed no matter where I was in the world (Buenos Aires, Mexico, Philippines, Indonesia, Idaho..etc) YOGA was like the new global language (not to mention one of the fastest growing industry). From clothes to communities – you could always rely on the consistency of the Yoga community. You know that feeling…..of taking care of yourself; feeling somewhat one with yourself..thereby feeling at one with the universe….that “idealist” point of view. From this experience, I’ve been working with the idea of YOGA as an Industry.
I’m currently exploring myriads of ways to execute this idea and right now it’s painting. It’s odd working where a medium (foreign to my practice) consumes my process. As a media/installation artist…I usually work with the concept..then I orchestrate the parts to make it fit. Where as with 2D/painting and drawing I’m finding myself drawn (uhem excuse the expression) to the brush stroke, the graphite residue the crinkles on the paper and the surface…..the medium itself – so in a way the concept escapes me.
Anyways – i’ll stop blabbing because maybe after this 3 week stint it was only about painting big beautiful forms on canvas ….and the actual piece (loosely titled “the Industry called Yoga”) will be some installation/performance piece – who knows. But in the meantime you get to accompany me on this exploration…starting with the big painting sketches.
