KUSF in EXILE – DJ Margaret Tedesco

last Saturday (day after my birthday) CIO was invited by Cheryl Meeker and hosted by DJ Margaret Tedesco to do an interview on KUSF in EXILE on her program called ROLL CALL: BAY AREA ARTS CULTURE. Along with discussing CIO projects, we discussed our own individual practices. The folks that were able to make it were me, Megan, Cheryl Meeker and Dan Spencer – to listen click on the logo (disclaimer, the first part of the recording is the playlist also my intro’s sound is a little muddled):

LSPS: Nara Denning

Public projections have given a new meaning to video. Experiencing moving pictures in public for free often translates to the of selling of a product or a lifestyle. With that in mind, programming at Luggage Store’s Projection Space has offered video art for everyone to experience. Videos presented have often been non-linear, non-narrative and site specific, accommodating for the temporal state a person experiences on the corner of 6th & Market.

For the month of October LSPS reconsiders the space by transforming the window into an outdoor movie screen presenting the narrative works of silent filmmaker Nara Denning. Under the Pavement, Denning’s new feature length compilation of five short films, offer viewers visually stunning and poetically composed narratives providing a respite from the hustle and bustle of 6th & Market and provoking thoughts, ideas and inspirations.

WHAT:  “LIVING WITHOUT MONEY”
(52 minutes, directed by Line Halvorsen)

Is it possible to feel rich without possessions? Can you live happily without money? In the documentary “Living Without Money”, we meet the German woman Heidemarie Schwermer (68) who made a deliberate choice to live without money 14 years ago. One day she cancelled her flat, donated all of her belongings and started a new life based on exchanging favors – without the use of money. The experiences she made totally changed her outlook on life. Today she is living an interesting and adventurous life, which is very much related to living in the moment without worrying about the future. She is constantly on the move and always trying to help others find their path towards a more simple and harmonic life. The reactions against her are many and various. While some get angry and call her a parasite, others think she is a visionary and a great source of inspiration.

The film reflects around themes of materialism and over-consumption – how money influences our way of thinking, living and acting – and the consequences this has on our life, health and the environment.

Green Bag Lady is an eco-friendly art project started in 2008. Teresa and her team of volunteer “Bagettes” make fabric bags out of donated material and give them away for FREE in exchange for a promise to use them instead of paper or plastic. To date they have given away over 17,000 bags all over the world.

Carlos Villa

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to be part of a group of distinguished panelist lucky enough to tell their most cherished story about Carlos Villa. This event was in conjunction with the launch of his book – CARLOS VILLA AND THE INTEGRITY OF SPACES and his amazing solo show (Manongs, Some Doors and a Bouquet of Crates) at the Mission Cultural Center. It was pretty much a reunion of various generations of artists touched by Carlos in one way or another. The stories were all great. One story that was common was that Carlos had a sense of believing in you .. even before you believed in yourself. Let’s just say that everyone that he’s taught, he’s worked with and/or has mentored has evolved into a success in their own rite. Thank you Carlos (and Nicole, Maurizzio and Moira)…it was an amazing evening. photos: Megan Wilson
