so Paz and I have decided to do a project where we photograph ourselves with some amazing artists (last one was with Gilbert & George) – though I’m thinking they might not have been. Anyways last night we went to see Zhang Huan have a conversation with Jay Xu about his new piece he installed and loaned to SF. I didn’t realize who he was until I saw his previous work…and I remember being in awe of his performances during grad school (’95) Here’s a link to his website you should check out. But if you’re living in SF you’re able to actually see his piece “Three Heads Six Arms” – a very beautiful copper sculpture on loan to the city until 2011. I noticed from a specific angle (standing northeast) there’s this weird allusion to the Mayan or rather Olmec culture – which is super intersting. Here’s more:
PUBLIC ART: Zhang Huan’s Three Heads Six Arms
The San Francisco Arts Commission is proud to present a new sculpture by celebrated Chinese artist Zhang Huan. Presented in conjunction with the Shanghai-San Francisco Sister City 30th Anniversary Celebration, Zhang’s colossal Three Heads Six Arms (2008) will make its world premiere in the heart of San Francisco’s Civic Center, the Joseph L. Alioto Performing Arts Piazza, which is located across the street from City Hall. Three Heads Six Arms, courtesy of the artist and The Pace Gallery, New York, will be on loan through 2011.
