Thai contemporary art

have to say the work there was okay…not so challenging or edgy (except the images i’m posting below). we visited 3 spaces – H Gallery, EAT ME and Kathmandu Photo Gallery. I’d say the majority of the work had some sort of reference to the history of the thai kingdom and buddhism..which didn’t really thrill me..especially after experiencing the works at the Grand Palace and Wat Pho (done several centuries prior). Even quoted in the “Bangkok Encounter” Guide – Manit Sriwanichpoom (owner of Kathmandu Gallery) says in response to the question, What are the weaknesses of the Thai art scene? “We are a non-confrontational culture and are reluctant to criticise through art.”

DISCLAIMER: I saved the flyer for this show at H Gallery/Kathmandu and even wrote down the artists’ name – BUT with all the packing and unpacking and packing, I mis-placed the names and titles of the pieces…the only reference I could give you is the gallery space.

Bed Supperclub

yes – I lost a bet and owed Megan one night in bangkok (cheezy as it may sound). I decided to check out one of the original supperclubs and was very much pleased.
one seriously can lay down after the meal and hang out (outifitted with blankies and super comfortable pillows). They’ve definitely merged concept with great food (my tastebuds were in heaven). Another plus was that they had nightly performances where the performers would interact with the audience (check out the video).

This particular piece was sort of a “James Bond” theme where the “bad guys” were trying to extract the map from the audience. The reason why the “bad guys” were able to access the map from us is because I had borrowed her riding crop to “whip” megan…the other guests probably thought we were part of the performance..but we weren’t. This place is another high recommend.

Chao Phraya River

our hotel – the Navalai – was conveniently by the river. so, instead of travelling by land – we’d usually take the riverboat down to the Saphon Taksin SkyTrain station.
here are some images from the commute – as well as from the cheezy tourist river tour we did the second to the last day

Koh Sumui

we decided to head out to the ocean…and what an ocean it was ! I have to say – even though the images are alittle muddy – this place sort of compares to Borocay. what was amazing is that you could spend a day on the beach reading, swimming and laying…..WITHOUT flies, mosquitoes and/or the wind annoying you! it was heavenly. A definite recommend.
